Prohibition of “Show-Off”

Here are some Qur’ân Verses and Hadiths that talk about “Showing off“. Doing things for the sight of man and not for Allâh (Subhânau wa Ta’âla)

Allâh, the Exalted said:

And they have been commanded no more than this: to worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion, being True (in faith); to establish regular Prayer; and to practise regular Charity; and that is the Religion Right and Straight.” [Holy Qur’an 98:5]

O you who believe! Do not render in vain your Sadaqah (charity) by reminders of your generosity or by injury, like him who spends his wealth to be seen of men, and he does not believe in Allâh, nor in the Last Day. His likeness is the likeness of a smooth rock on which is a little dust; on it falls heavy rain which leaves it bare. They are not able to do anything with what they have earned. And Allâh does not guide the disbelieving people.” [Holy Quran 2:264]

Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allâh, but it is He Who deceives them. And when they stand up for As-Salât (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allâh but little.” [Holy Qur’an 4:142]

Abû Hurairah (Radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu) said: The Messenger of Allâh (Sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said, “Almighty Allâh says, I am the One Who is most free from want of partners. He who does a thing for the sake of someone else besides Me, I discard him and his polytheism.'” [Muslim]

Abû Hurairah (Radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu) said: I heard the Messenger of Allâh (Sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) saying, “The first to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who had died as a martyr. He will be brought forward. Allâh will remind him of the favours He had bestowed upon him and the man will acknowledge them. Then Allâh will ask him: What did you do to express gratitiude for it?” The man will reply I fought for Your Cause till I was martyred.” Allâh will say: You have lied. You fought so that people might call you courageous; and they have done so. Command will then be issued about him and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.

Next a man who had acquired and imparted knowledge and read Qur’ân will be brought forward, Allâh will remind him of the favours He had bestowed upon him and the man will acknowledge them. Then Allâh will ask him: What did you do to express your gratitude for it?” The man will reply: I acquired knowledge and taught it, and read the Qur’ân for Your sake.” Allâh will say to him: You have lied. You acquired knowledge so that people might call you a learned (man), and you read Qur’ân so that they might call you a reciter, and they have done so.” Command will then be issued about him and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell.

Next a man whom Allâh will had made affluent and to whom Allâh have given plenty of wealth, will be brought forward, Allâh will remind him of the favours He had bestowed on him and the man will acknowledge them. Allâh will ask him: What did you do to express your gratitude for it?” The man will reply: I did not neglect any of the way You liked wealth to be spend liberally for Your sake.” Allâh will say to him: You have lied. You did it so that people might call you generous, and they have done so.” Command will then be issued about him and he will be dragged on his face and thrown into Hell. [Muslim]

Jundub (Radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu) said: The Prophet (Sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said, He who so acts to ‘show off’, Allah will disgrace him on the Day of Resurrection, and he who does good deeds that people (may hold him in high esteem), Allah will expose his hidden evil intentions before the people on the Day of Resurrection.” [Al-bukhari and Muslim]

Abû Hurairah (Radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu) said: The Messenger of Allâh (Sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said, A person who acquires (religoius) knowledge, which is (normally) acquired to gain the Pleasure of Allâh, (for the sole reason) to secure wordly comforts will not even smell the fragrance of Jannah on the Day of Resurrection (i.e., will not enter Jannah).” [Abû Dâwûd]

Doing things solely to make yourself look more ‘knowledge‘ or ‘generous‘ or ‘courageous‘ (i.e. Showing off) in the eyes of man and not doing it for the sake of Allâh (Subhânau wa Ta’âla) will get you Hellfire. Because you are misleading people into thinking your are someone you are not.

Insha’Allâh I will always remind myself before reminding others. This post is for me as much as it is for all of you. Remember to do your good deeds for the sake of Allâh (Subhânau wa Ta’âla) and not to make yourself look better in the eyes of your brothers and sisters.
